Bell-ringing

St Nicholas Church in Thanington has six bells, three dating from the 17th century and three from the 20th century. They are the second lightest ring of six bells in Kent weighing in at 4 cwt 2 pounds and 5 ounces.

The biggest and oldest three are mounted in a teak frame fitted in 1929 with the newer bells in steel frames fitted in 1948 and 1966. The fifth bell is heavier than the tenor bell. The bells are hung for full circle ringing from an upstairs room in the tower.

Over the years the number of ringers has varied from none in 1990 to 15 in the early years of this century. Currently there are three ringers with two people learning to ring.  Anyone interested in trying the art of ringing is welcome. You do not have to be a churchgoer. Ringing practice takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7pm until 9pm.
