I'm new here

A warm welcome to Thanington Parish Church. Here’s some practical information you may find helpful:

How to find us:

St Nicholas Church building is on Thanington Road, Canterbury. The church building is set back from the road behind a very large and very old yew tree. So, look out for the wooden lychgate by the road – this is the way in.

Parking

If you need to travel by car, there is parking  on Thanington Road beside the churchyard. There are also often parking spaces just round the corner near the top of Grays Way.

How to get in

Come through the lychgate and down the path towards the yew tree.

  • For the main entrance, carry on straight down the path to the front door. Don’t be put off if the door looks closed (we have to keep the squirrels out!). Just give it a push and come on in. Please be aware that there are a couple of steps from the porch into the church
  • For the hall, keep to the left of the yew tree and follow the path round to the hall door. Again if the door is closed, please just try the handle and come on in.
  • For step-free access to the church, keep left at the big yew tree and and follow the path round to the hall door. There is a small ramp over the lip of the hall door and a short corrridor connects the hall to the church. Empty push chairs can be parked in the hall.

What is it like inside?

Although this is an historic church building, it was reordered in 2004/2005. So alongside stone walls and stained glass windows, there is wooden flooring and comfortable chairs.  A picture is worth a thousand words, so to see the inside of the church, visit the Hire page

Where is the toilet?

The toilet is accessed through the church hall. Please note, the toilet is not fully accessible. There is a single step down when entering the toilet from the hall.

What to expect at different services?

For details of the different Sunday services, visit the worship page

What about the little ones?

We welcome families with young children and understand that they may need to move around a bit

Thanington Messy Church happens on the third Sunday of the month 4:00 – 5:30 pm. It is ideal for families with children, though all are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

We don’t currently have supervised children’s groups during our Sunday morning services but we have a selection of children’s books, activities and toys for pre-schoolers. There is a space in the side chapel where parents can take their children if they want a bit more space to move around.

How can I give to support the work of the church?

Thanington Parish Church relies on the generous giving of its congregation and wider community. There are different ways to give – online, contactless,  or cash. For more information visit our Giving page
