Our Christian Beliefs

The Apostles Creed offers a summary of core Christian beliefs:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit

At the heart of the Christian faith is the belief in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that God is the creator of the universe.  We believe that Jesus is God’s Son, God in human form, who reveals to us that God is a loving Father through his birth, his life, his death and resurrection. We believe that God is at work today through his Holy Spirit.

Christians believe that God has revealed himself through the natural world, through the Bible, and most clearly in Jesus Christ. We believe that we can experience God in personal ways through the work of God’s Holy Spirit in our lives.

God’s big love

God loves each of us so much he accepts us as we are. He invites us to believe and trust in Jesus, and to enter into a relationship with God – a relationship which begins now and continues into eternity.

But God loves each of us so much that he doesn’t want to leave us as we are. So being a Christian also means choosing to live for God, choosing to follow the example and teaching of Jesus, summed up in the greatest command – to love God with all that we are and to love other people as ourselves.

God’s big family

Being a Christian means being part of God’s big family, which we call the church.  It means meeting together to worship God and to pray for the world, to learn together what it means to follow Jesus in everyday life, to care for one another, to encourage one another to follow Jesus, to love and serve others together.

Of course, like all families, we sometimes make mistakes and hurt one another, so we believe in receiving God’s forgiving love and sharing that with one another.

God’s big plan

The church is like a jigsaw without any edge pieces, so there’s always room for somebody else. Of course, the church is also different than a jigsaw, because it is formed of people who grow and change. And we believe God’s Holy Spirit is in the business of transforming people’s lives and piecing us together into an ever-changing picture which is full of faith, hope and love.

We believe God has a greater purpose to make things new in an eternal kingdom full of life and love, where there is no more sin, no more conflict, no more sickness, no more death. God longs for all to join in.
